How is the water SO blue?

One of the first things people say when they arrive at St Andrews Lakes is: “Wow – look at the water!” And honestly? We never get tired of hearing it.

The vibrant blue hue and stunning clarity of our lake aren’t just a lucky accident – there’s some fascinating science behind it.

So, if you’ve ever wondered why the water here looks like something straight out of the Mediterranean, here’s the basics:

Spring-fed

Our lake is spring-fed, which means it’s constantly replenished by fresh groundwater filtered through layers of chalk and rock. That water travels all the way from the Chilterns, bringing with it a mix of natural minerals that give the lake its unique sparkle.

Former quarry

Before it became a lake, this area was a quarry – and that legacy plays a big role in what you see today. The land is naturally rich in limestone and calcium carbonate, and when these minerals dissolve into the water, they scatter sunlight in a unique way. The result? A vivid turquoise glow, especially when the sun is shining.

Clear and clean

We let nature do the hard work when it comes to keeping our water clear – but we still take safety seriously. That’s why the lake is tested monthly to make sure it stays clean, safe, and perfect for our guests.  Whether you’re paddling, swimming, or renting a paddleboard, you can relax knowing it’s one of the cleanest spots in Kent. So clean, in fact, it’s just one grade off drinking water!

A hidden gem

Set in the peaceful Kent countryside – but just a short trip from the motorway and national rail – St Andrews Lakes offers the kind of natural escape that feels worlds away from daily life. Whether you're here for a paddleboard, pedalo, kayak, or just to lounge by the shore, there's no better place to unwind in Kent.

See it for yourself!
